By JENNIFER MANN The Patriot Ledger SCITUATE - Police arrested 34 people in Scituate yesterday and Tuesday.
There was at least one stabbing, and two officers were injured after a group of young adults tried to flee from them in a car.
Lt. Michael Stewart said the Fourth of July and the holiday eve are traditionally among the busiest of the year for the department.
He said officers responded Tuesday night to reports of two stabbings, only one of which could be confirmed. There were also fights, disturbances and reports of minors under the influence.
Stewart said a group of teens, believed to be from Silver Lake Regional High School, were picking fights along the beach and punching innocent people, including one woman.
He said police found a knife, but those involved gave conflicting accounts of whether someone had been stabbed and no victim was found.
As many as four people were arrested in connection with those incidents.
Police responded to another reported stabbing at Sand Hills Beach, arresting and charging a juvenile with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
The victim was taken to South Shore Hospital with what Stewart said were superficial wounds.
In another incident, police officer Eric Steverman and Sgt. Paul Norton stopped a carload of young adults whom they had allegedly observed drinking alcohol.
The officers were in plain clothes, but showed their badges to identify themselves, Stewart said.
He said the driver tried to drive away, running over Steverman’s foot and dragging Norton for a short distance after his pant leg got caught in the car door. Police arrested the driver, who faces several charges including assault and battery and leaving the scene. Police also arrested the six passengers, who are not from Scituate, for underage drinking.
Both officers were checked by medical personnel and are in good condition.
