By Maureen Boyle, Enterprise staff writer BROCKTON — Plans to hire a private security firm to patrol D.W. Field park this summer are temporarily on hold.
Police Chief William Conlon said the lawyer from the police officers union sent a “preemptive” grievance letter to the city saying it will oppose the plan.
He said the city will further discuss the issue before bringing in a private company.
“I don't want to rush into this and create a problem,” Conlon said.
The chief said the plan isn't dead yet.
“I really would like to do it. It seems to make sense,” he said.
Conlon had hoped to sign a contract with the firm — Day and Zimmermann Protection Technology of Atlanta, formerly Reliable Security Guard Agency Inc. of Salem, N.H., — that now provides security for the housing authority.
He wanted the firm to provide a two-person, seven-day bike patrol at the park.
The cost would have been between $12,000 and $15,000, a fraction of the price to have Brockton officers there on overtime, he said.
The security officers would have had phones and radios to contact Brockton police if there was a problem needing law enforcement attention.
The city once had park police officers who were sworn in as a special police officers by the police chief. Those officers were not technically Brockton patrolmen, although they had arrest powers in city parks. They were supervised by the Park Commission, but paid through the Police Department.
The last person to hold the job was Charles Studenski, the former police chief's brother, who was forced to retire Dec. 22, 2002, after being on disability since Jan. 17, 2000.
