Alleged copper thief arrested after car breaks down
By Dan Atkinson
Staff Writer

AMESBURY - A former employee allegedly stole copper from a local business over the weekend and drove it to Newton - where his car died and had to be left in his mother's driveway, police said.
Police responded to J & H Machine on Oakland Street Monday morning after reports of a break-in. Sgt. Mark Gagnon said someone broke in over the weekend and stole copper bars valued at $1,100. The company had no idea who would have burgled them, Gagnon said, but company officials did mention an employee who left several months ago on bad terms - John Cedrone, 44, of 21 Perkins St.
The only other piece of evidence police had was a scrape of red paint left on the building. It had not been on the building before, and Gagnon said it appeared to be from the thief's car.
"Lo and behold, we started investigating, and it turned out that Mr. Cedrone had a red car down in Newton," Gagnon said.
Detective Richard Poulin applied for a search warrant and notified Newton police, who staked out the car at Cedrone's mother's house in Newtonville. When Amesbury police arrived, they found the copper bars in the car, Gagnon said. Cedrone drove to his mother's house late Saturday night, but his car broke down and had to be left at the house, according to the police report.
After recovering the copper, police arrested Cedrone Monday night and charged him with breaking and entering to commit a felony, larceny and malicious destruction of property. Gagnon said Cedrone had several open alcohol-related offenses and is being held in Middleton Jail on $100,000 cash bail.
"It's not that major a deal, but (the arrest) stops the guy from doing other things," Gagnon said. "It takes him off the street."

I've noticed that theft of copper has become a trend now. How much is this stuff worth?

My father is a plumber so he collects the old copper and returns it which I help him do the last time we return about 200 pounds of copper which was worth about $520.00 so about $2.60 per pound. Which was about two or three weeks ago and the price continues to rise
