NEWTON - A rash of recent bank robberies, the most recent yesterday at Eastern Savings Bank on Commonwealth Avenue, may be connected, according to police.
A "scruffy looking" man entered the bank at 2060 Commonwealth Ave. around 11:15 a.m. yesterday and passed a note to a teller demanding money, according to police. He took an undisclosed amount of money and ran west on Commonwealth Avenue, police said.
Bank employees told police the suspect was a white man with a thin build, about 5-feet 10-inches tall, wearing a maroon baseball cap, sunglasses and light gray shirt.
No weapon was shown, according to police.
On Saturday, the Citizens Bank at 1084 Lexington St, in Waltham was robbed around 9 a.m., police said.
Bank employees also told police the suspect was a white man with a thin build, about 5-feet 10-inches tall. They said the man wore a blue T-shirt, a white baseball hat and light-colored shorts.
The man passed a note to a teller demanding money, got an undetermined amount of cash and fled in an unknown direction.
Waltham resident Barbara Howard said she was at the bank shortly after the branch was robbed.
"I went down to use the (automated teller machine), just as soon as I put my foot on the sidewalk, this police officer came running down the sidewalk with his gun drawn," she said. "I got a little scared ... I think what he thought was there might be somebody still in the bank."
Waltham and Newton police said the holdups could be linked.
