PLYMOUTH - Police are taking steps to keep tomorrow night’s Fourth of July celebration on White Horse Beach a family affair.

Beginning at 6 p.m., they plan to block all traffic from White Horse Road and Rocky Hill Road to Taylor Avenue at Manomet Point Road, Capt. Michael Botieri said. Only residents will be allowed to park on any side street in the area.

Plymouth residents have a longstanding tradition of celebrating the night before the Fourth on White Horse Beach with bonfires, picnics and parties. The celebrations have sometimes become raucous, leading to arrests.

During the past five years, police have put more officers on duty checking White Horse and surrounding smaller beaches for problems. Officers have started sweeping the beach at 10 or 11 p.m. to get everyone heading home before problems begin.

Police will watch for drinking by minors and may ask permission to search coolers if they suspect minors have alcohol, Botieri said.

He said officers will check the smaller beaches and return to White Horse Beach throughout the night to check for crowds.

Traffic restrictions tomorrow are:

—Beginning at 6 p.m, Taylor Avenue will be blocked to all motorists except residents from the intersection of White Horse Road and Rocky Hill Road to the intersection of Taylor Avenue and Manomet Point Road.

—Beginning at 6 p.m., all side streets that lead to the Priscilla Beach area will be closed to motorists other than residents.

—No parking all day along both sides of Manomet Point Road and White Horse Beach Road.

—No parking on Brian’s Way and Lopresti, Vine Brook, Cary, Fair Oaks and Arboretum roads, and at Manomet Elementary School.

Traffic restrictions for Wednesday:
—Beginning at 5 a.m., no parking on Water Street between Union and Brewster streets.

—Beginning at 6 a.m., no parking on either side of Court Street from North Street to Allerton Street, all of Main Street and Main Street Extension, and Sandwich Street from Water Street to Mount. Pleasant Street.

—No parking on Morton Park Road and Thoreau Road.
