GREENFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) A homeless man is speaking out, claiming to be the victim of a brutal beating. As 22News reporter Anthony DiLorenzo discovered, Greenfield Police are looking into a report that teenagers tried to set a man on fire.
Ben Antonelli has been part of Greenfield's homeless population for about five years. Last Friday, he said it was one of the worst nights of his life, claiming he was savagely set on fire by six teenagers while he slept. "When they found out I was there, they took sticks that were burning and beat me with them," explained Antonelli. Officer Marcus Paulin said the department is investigating the report. Antonelli claims they were threatening to "kill me and cook me and burn me." Lots of homeless folks down on their luck sleep in what's called "the Jungle." The 58-year-old is now too afraid to go back. Officer Paulin said it's a spot shared by young kids, many who like to hassle the homeless. We spoke to several teens that frequent the Jungle but would never dream of doing anything like that. They said they use the spot as a sanctuary. "There's a place to walk, sit; I go down there to read," said Liam Collier of Greenfield, "I think its just boredom, people resort to violent tendencies." But others can't put logic behind inhumanity. "It's beyond me, I don't know who the hell would do that," said Steven Hill of Greenfield, "Why mess with a homeless person; they have nothing." Now Antonelli has even less, he claimed his bed was also burned. But he'll move on, he's used to fighting back.
