(WBZ)LEOMINSTER Two young men are charged with trying to rob a store in Leominster over the weekend with a hatchet. After police caught one of them, they reportedly used his cell phone to capture his partner.
Police told the Worcester Telegram & Gazette that Daniel Callahan, 18, of Westminster and David Zenon, 20, Phillipston went into the convenience store at Mike's Super Shell around 1 a.m. Sunday armed and looking for money.
Two customers broke up the robbery attempt and police say Callahan swung a hatchet at the clerk before he and Zenon ran off. The clerk was treated for cuts on his neck and lip.
Officers captured Callahan about a half-hour later. Unable to find Zenon, they used Callahan's cell phone to send a text message to him. They arranged a meeting and when Zenon showed up, he was arrested.
Both men will be arraigned Monday in Leominster District Court.
CU L8R! Police pose as text-messaging robber to nab accomplice
LEOMINSTER, Mass. -- Police used a new weapon to find a man accused of trying to rob a gas station -- his accomplice's cell phone.
David Callahan, 18, of Westminster, and David Zenon, 20, of Phillipston, text-messaged each other on their cell phones before attempting to rob Mike's Super Shell, 436 Lancaster St., at 1 a.m. Sunday.
Callahan allegedly held a hatchet to the clerk's neck while Zenon yelled "Kill him!" When two patrons entered, the duo left -- but not before Callahan swung the hatchet at the clerk, cutting his lip and neck.
Police recognized Callahan on the street approximately half an hour afterwards. When they confiscated his cell phone, they saw the text exchanges with Zenon.
So they stepped in and sent a message telling Zenon to meet "Callahan" at Sixth and Webber St. Zenon walked into the trap and was arrested.
The two are charged with armed robbery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Callahan is also charged with armed assault with intent to murder. Arraignment was expected Monday in Leominster District Court.
