INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-- A police charity bike ride to raise money for fallen officers wrapped up Saturday at the Heroes of Public Safety Monument. In addition to COPS, or Concerns of Police Survivors fundraising, every pedal stroke of their one thousand mile journey honored two men killed. Carolyn Dudley high-fived COPS riders as they finished the last leg of their trip. "I've been checking on them a lot; glad to have them home today," Carolyn said. Last year, the riders didn't finish their trip. Carolyn's husband, Indiana State Police Lieutenant Gary Dudley and Lake County Police Chief Gary Martin died, while participating in this very event. Since then, the emotional journey has been a rough one. "It's just difficult knowing that he's not with us this year," Carolyn said. "It was 13 days of riding and a thousand miles today. We rode through rain heat, hills, beautiful southern Indiana but it just wasn't the same this year without those two men with us," one of the riders said Saturday. But the COPS charity continues to raise money and offer support to survivors. "It's also very rewarding because I see what Gary's dream was and how they've carried it out and that is just an awesome feeling to see them continue with his goal," Carolyn said. That goal is to provide for the families of fallen officers. During this journey the number of Indiana officers killed increased one more; from 354 to 355 with the death of a Floyd County deputy. Carolyn said now that everyone is safely home it has brought closure not just to her but to all those who participated. "This is the end of, not the end of the ride, by any means, this is the end of a very emotional time for us getting through this first years ride without Gary and Gary and just to see that the ride does continue," Carolyn said. The charity ride raised more than $46,000 for the families of fallen officers.
