City hopes open-air toilets will relieve public peeing problem

EDMONTON - These are not for the faint of heart - or bladder.

City officials in Edmonton are planning to install three open-air urinals this summer in a bid to curb public peeing in a popular south-side neighburhood.

But the portable units will not be enclosed in any way.

"The trick is to make sure (the urinals) are obvious at night and people will be able to see them and go use them," said Shirley Lowe, executive director of the Old Strathcona Business Association.

Lowe said the urinals are the same as ones used in Victoria and in many European cities.

The city is also ordering three traditional outhouses for women.

The urinals will sit in Old Strathcona, a neighbourhood known for its bars and as the site of numerous fights and public urination during last year's Stanley Cup final, when the Oilers were making a run for the championship.

The toilets will be put up after 10 p.m. from Thursdays to Saturdays starting sometime in July, said Davies. They will be taken away during the day.

Edmonton Coun. Michael Phair said porta-potties should help crack down on partiers who relieve themselves in doorways and back alleys.

The city recently doubled the fine for public urination.
