BRENTWOOD, N.H. -- The widow of a New Hampshire lawyer who disappeared at sea pleaded not guilty Thursday to stealing money from her deceased husband's law firm and other groups.
Deborah Woods, of Stratham, N.H., was arraigned in Rockingham County Superior Court on charges of credit card fraud, forgery and theft. Prosecutors said that Woods, 52, embezzled more than $110,000 from an estate being handled by the Gage Law Office, where her husband was a partner, then tried to cover it up with money stolen from a second law firm where she also worked.
Woods worked as a bookkeeper at Gage Law Office, formerly known as Gage & Woods, for 2½ years until 2006 when the accusations came out. Her husband, Stephen Woods, fell overboard while on a sailing trip with their son in October 2005.
Prosecutors allege Deborah Woods used credit cards belonging to her husband's former law partner and another person, forged their signatures, made fake entries into the law firm's ledgers and stole from a second estate being handled by Sutherland Law Office.
Woods has filed financial paperwork seeking representation by a public defender. She arrived at her court arraignment without a lawyer, and one was temporarily assigned to represent her for the hearing.
Woods was allowed free on $2,500 cash and $150,000 personal recognizance bail.
Separately, Stephen Woods' former law partner, Thomas Gage, is suing Deborah Woods over the alleged thefts.
