NEWBERRY CO., SC (WIS) - An Ohio man is accused of driving 93 miles per hour in a 60 mile per hour zone, in a stolen pickup truck, during a police chase. And he's accused of shooting at officers, sideswiping a Highway Patrol cruiser, and then continuing the chase on foot. Officers say Toby Roger of Uniontown was driving a truck stolen out of Summit County, Ohio. Initially, they say Roger sped off as soon as the officer stepped out of his vehicle. At that time, two patrol cars were involved in the chase. The pursuit went from Spartanburg to Laurens and into Newberry and Saluda Counties. Sergeant Kelly Hughes says Roger appears to have fired two shots during the chase. That matter is being investigated by the Laurens County Sheriff's department. Officers say one bullet hit the windshield of a snack food truck, but no one was injured. In Newberry County, officers used spikes on the roadway which deflated the right front tire of the truck. Roger is said to have driven up to nine miles on the pickup's rim. Sgt. Hughes says Roger then came up behind a patrol car from behind and side-swiped it on the driver side. If investigators determine the collision was intentional, Roger could be charged with assault and battery with intent to kill. Hughes says Roger went off the roadway, drove into a ditch and ran from the truck before he was taken into custody. He suffered cuts and bruises and was taken to the Newberry hospital. Patrol Lance Corporal Tim Edwards was treated and released at the hospital. He later told WIS News 10 he was OK, but said he could not comment on the incident. Investigators found two handguns and a rifle in the stolen truck.
