A Washington, D.C. man involved in a dispute with his neighbors is hospitalized with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, following a bizarre series of events.
Investigators say Nathaniel Rabinowitz barricaded himself in his house in the 1700 block of Vermont Avenue, Northwest. Police surrounded the home and when they forced their way into the house, they encountered a loud boom, a burst of flames, and the sound of gunfire.
One officer who broke down the front door says it appeared to be booby-trapped, because the house immediately burst into flames. After firefighters put out the blaze, police found Rabinowitz in an upstairs bedroom. He had a gunshot wound to the head. Rabinowitz is hospitalized in grave but stable condition. Surgeons say they are unable to remove the bullet. Investigators confirm they found a handgun on the scene. Neighbors had reported hearing multiple shots but investigators say they only found one shell casing. Police were summoned to the home by Rabinowitz's father, who had called authorities when he couldn't reach his son.
In recent weeks, Nathaniel Rabinowitz has been involved in a dispute with his neighbors over a ladder outside his home. The neighbors say burglars used the ladder to access their skylights so they could break in.
