CRANSTON, R.I. -- A man who lost his father in the line of duty is taking up the same call to service.
NBC 10's Michelle Brown reported that Christopher Ian McGregor graduated Friday from the Municipal Police Academy.
"I wanted to pas on the family legacy of police work. And it really brings a lot of honor to myself and my family," McGregor said.
McGregor's father, Maj. Alister McGregor, was accidentally shot and killed during a training exercise in East Providence in 2001.
McGregor, 25, said becoming a police officer is a way to honor his father while giving back to the community.
"Seeing the camaraderie of fellow officers after my father's death really played a pivotal part in me wanting to go into the field," McGregor said.
Many of those officers were on hand Friday to show their support for McGregor.
"We're going to see a number of East Providence officers here to show support for Ian and congratulate him on the beginning of his career," East Providence police Chief Hubert Paquette said.
A moment of silence for all deceased police officers was observed during the graduation ceremony.
"I definitely feel my father was here today. I know he would be proud of myself and my fellow classmates," McGregor said.
Twenty-nine graduates will head to 13 agencies after completing 15 weeks of training.
"I am so proud of my son for stepping up in the tradition of his father," McGregor's mother, Toni, said. "It runs in my family."
It was a day to celebrate the future while paying tribute to the past.
"I really wanted to pay back that support and was able to join the Newport police force. I look forward to serving the great city of Newport," Christopher McGregor said.
McGregor reports for work at the Newport Police Department on Monday.
