DES MOINES, Iowa --
A chase downtown Thursday was the third incident in two weeks in which a Des Moines police officer was injured on duty.
Three officers have been injured.
Tim Hayes said he looked outside his window and snapped photos of Cortez McCullough, who is accused of attempted murder in connection with a chase and carjacking downtown.
"You can really see the gun and it was like, 'Wow, he has a gun,' and I didn't know if he was serious about using it, but I was glad I was in a building with the door locked," Hayes said.
Within seconds of when that photograph was taken, McCullough carjacked a city vehicle and led police on a chase down Locust Street, according to Des Moines police.
Police said McCullough never fired his gun and that he was under the influence of PCP, cocaine and marijuana. Police said that Officer Luke Wilson was off duty and wearing his uniform when he saw McCullough carjack a city vehicle. Police said he asked McCullough to stop, but he didn't and Wilson fired shots. McCullough was shot in the leg.
Wilson was not hurt. Police said he will remain on active duty during the investigation.
Police said McCullough continued on in the pickup truck and that that Officer James Butler saw him coming and made a quick decision to try to stop him with his vehicle. Butler radioed for help and other officers took McCullough into custody.
"Those are split-second decisions officers have to make, and he chose to make one that he knew that could potentially injure him severely," said police spokesman Sgt. Todd Dykstra.
Butler suffered minor injuries to his arm when the air bag deployed. Two of his fellow officers are also recovering from injuries suffered on the job.
Police said that on Wednesday night, a driver hit Officer Eric Hartman along Interstate 235 while he was running radar.
Two weeks ago, Officer Martin Seibert was seriously injured during a high-speed chase when the suspect rammed into a telephone pole.
"For some reason, these things tend to happen more in the summer than in the winter, but again, it's good officers doing good police work," said Mayor Frank Cownie.
"Every officer understands in the course of his or her duties that these things may occur and that's something we accept. We don't want them to occur, but we know it's a possibility," Dykstra said.
Seibert is still recovering at home from a broken hip, among other injuries. Police said Hartman is doing well.
