WILMINGTON -- A 33-year-old Wilmington man was arrested and charged with assault and battery after an early morning standoff with police Friday.
Robert M. Palazzi, of 2 Chase Road, Wilmington, was to be arraigned this morning at Woburn District Court for allegedly breaking into his ex-girlfriend's house at 1:15 a.m., beating her and threatening her, police said.
The victim made a 911 call to police, telling them she had awoken to find Palazzi standing over her and questioning her about the collapse of their relationship, police said. When she asked Palazzi to leave, police alleged he assaulted her and threw her against a bureau.
Palazzi was "clearly intoxicated," the victim told police, and he threatened to shoot himself in front of her. When the victim said she was going to call police, police said Palazzi smashed her phone and fled the house.
Police went to Palazzi's residence, where they saw him walking around inside the house. But he refused to answer the door, police said. Wilmington Police Lt. J. Christopher Neville, also a North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) crisis negotiator, tried to contact Palazzi.
Palazzi refused to surrender and the NEMLEC SWAT team was called to the scene at 3:30 a.m., police said.
After further negotiations, Palazzi surrendered shortly after 5 a.m. He walked out his front door and was taken into custody by SWAT team members. No weapons were recovered from the house and police said Palazzi has no record of any earlier domestic incidents.
