New York State Police Test Announced

(Click here to view the original thread on the MassCops Message Board)

Posted by: fenwayfan

Our neighbors to the west are finally going to test again. The tests are not scheduled to begin until 2008 but they have open enrollment now to schedule yourself to take the test. The deadline to apply is December 1, 2007 at midnight. Which isn't that far off. Just like Massachusetts, New York seems to test once every millenium. The website is www.nytrooper.com The salary and benefits of NYSP are pretty amazing. For example $50,374 - Starting salary (during Academy training) and $61,525 - Upon graduation from the Academy.

Posted by: Sniper

Wow, they just graduated a class the end of last year........

Posted by: fenwayfan

Yeah....but I think that class was basically comprised of those candidates that qualified for earlier classes but couldn't attend due to military committments/deployments. The last written test was years ago.

Posted by: NegroRotary

I signed up for that one, good money lol

Posted by: screamineagle

where else can you wear a purple tie and still be a bad ass mofo!!

Posted by: NegroRotary

lmao come on SE they look good lmao

Posted by: JLT770

is anyone a NY State Trooper on here? The pay makes up for that purple tie i think...still though....

Posted by: Killjoy

Purple knit tie...

Posted by: NegroRotary

Forget the color, look at the pay!

Posted by: JLT770

yeah, i just wish the founders or whatever had better taste... but for 61,500 out of the academy...i could live somewhat close to home and do pretty well for myself

Posted by: mpr4601

Don't forget the modified Stetson hats and stop-sign looking badge that they don't even wear on their uniform, lol. Kidding aside, great pay and great organization to work for.

Posted by: LTJMC

id wear a purple polka dot tie for that $$$

Posted by: tms1989

Do you guys think odd looking uniforms actually change the way people think about the police?

Posted by: NegroRotary

FOrget about the way think about you, you still law and making good $$$$

Posted by: WaterPistola

so who signed up for the test now that registration is over? and if so is anyone going to be going to the review sessions?

Posted by: WaterPistola

just got back from the test prep, somewhat worth it. the preview test was worth it because i know now this is going to be a lot more difficult than the CS, PAPD, NYPD exams.

almost 28,000 people signed up to take the 2008 exam. based on the 2004 exam about 18,000 will pass, about 6,000 people won't even show up to the exam. They called about 11,000 people off the 2004 list over 4 years. lowest score getting a letter was 78.80.

results will come out end of april, starting June 1, they will send letters out to the first 1,000. 4-6 months after that, another 1,000, etc.

hopes this helps anyone who signed up

I took the 2000 or 2001 test and I believe it was at Northeaster Univ. I got somewhere in the high 80s and got called 2 years later to continue the process but I was somewhat busy when they called. Hint: sand, rocks, and a tad bit warm.

I signed up for exam, anything tricky or is it strait forward. DO you recommend any study guides that could help if I even drive to albany.

Thanks

Posted by: WaterPistola

brush up on basic arithmetic and grammar, i made some dumb mistakes on the practice test because of it. i hope i dont F up when it comes time for the real test.

Posted by: Hoss1868

Just like to remind people about the pay of NYSP...........they work (5) 12-hour work days a week.......Therefore, that pay is based upon a 60 hour work week....not a 40 hour......I recently found that out and just thought it was interesting and good to know. Good luck to everyone testing!

Posted by: WaterPistola

i knew it was too good to be true! where did you find this info?

after reviewing the site, yes they have 60 hour work weeks, but the next work week is 24 hours. after you do the math out its the same amount of hours a month or a little less than someone working 40 hours a week for a month. the troopers work 168 hours per schedule (about a month). which is about 4 weeks and a day in a month.

When I was testing around a few years back I got those Arco Police Officer/State Trooper study books from the book store. They're somewhat challenging and useful.

Posted by: shaund44

Grammer or spelling, I know they are different but after looking at the test guide it looks more like spelling and work association. Does this sound right or is it me.

Posted by: WaterPistola

well its both, but yes focus on spelling, word use, grammar, etc. basically because what you write in a report has to "stand alone" in court. they want to make sure you know your stuff.

Posted by: NegroRotary

I'm taking the test Jan 19, but if I get hire by NYPD, i don't know if I want to go through another police academy

Posted by: WaterPistola

Posted by: NegroRotary

Water Pistola i'm taking mine in NYC i think, but i better double check lol

SE yes, trust me i know the money is good, i guess i'll find out when i'm in that situation and i'll let you know

Posted by: WaterPistola

rotary you probably are, i am doing the testing and prep stages through troop G in Albany.

Posted by: NegroRotary

Cool, good luck man!

Posted by: WaterPistola

just wondering if anyone else took the NYSP exam in January or February?

Posted by: CTrain

Two of my roommates did - still no results, right?

Posted by: WaterPistola

not yet apparently there is some type of "delay". I'm not to upset about it waiting has become one of my better qualities in the past year haha

You didn't want to wear a stop sign for a badge anyway, right?

Posted by: WaterPistola

the 60k to start would certainly help!

But the feds and the common-wealth already took $30K of it back in April.

Posted by: SBU29

I took the test in Feb. My sister is a NY State Trooper and she got my test score from the recruiter at her troop.

So just to let people know they do have the scores but for some reason there is a delay in making up the list I guess. I too am still waiting for the letter in the mail so I can see where I rank on the list, because the recruiter didn't know that, she just had scores.

If I was you though I still wouldn't call them and say "Hey I know of a guy who has his score where the F*%K is mine" they might not like that.

Oh by the way I scored a 95%

Please excuse the criticism, but to post information in a place that can be accessible to others that your 'sister is a state police officer' and was able to get information for you that others cannot get, may certainly expose her to possible IA action.

What was done for you by your family member should remain confidential to you and not shared with others.

Good luck in your endeavor.

Remember guys, NYSP pay is good but--no details in NY state. That 61K take home is about 35-45k. How is overtime with them?

Posted by: SBU29

Point taken PapaBear, I should have used my head on that one.

I was only trying to let people know that they have the scores and to just sit tight as they should be coming soon.

As for the discussion about pay, its true they don't have details but when you live upstate like the Syracuse area, housing is very cheap compared to MA. so the base pay is actualy great even without the details.

Posted by: kwflatbed

If they don't have details how come on my frequent trips to upstate NY
I see them working the construction sites on the thruway??

Posted by: SBU29

Those are regular shifts or they're overtime shifts, they have a special unit thats designated just for sitting at road jobs.

There is no detail pay rate like here in MA.

Posted by: Paul22

Exam scores will be available on June 30. They will not be mailed, only available to view online. This is all per the email I recieved and it's on NYTROOPER.com

Posted by: SBU29

Got the offical score, I stand corrected I got a 99.9 and I'm 291 on the list.

Posted by: WaterPistola

good luck processing SBU, for me it will be about 3-4 years down the road

Posted by: SBU29

WaterPistola don't worry I won't be processing either, I still have to finish getting some college credits so I'll have to defer till at least the next processing. I just got picked up by a PD on the north shore so school has been on the back burner.
