SALT LAKE CITY -- There's no money-back guarantee in love.
That's the gist of a ruling in the case of the jilted fiance. The Utah Court of Appeals has rejected Layne Hess' suit to get back thousands of dollars he spent during his engagement to Jody Johnston.
She returned an engagement ring in April 2005 and called off their wedding. Hess went to court to recover the money he spent on a vasectomy, a cruise to Alaska, a trip to France and other gifts. Hess claimed he wouldn't have shelled out all that dough if they weren't getting hitched.
He charged his ex with unjust enrichment and breach of contract. But the court doesn't agree. The justices noted Hess didn't lose everything -- he got the ring back.
