Question concerning Aux. employment

In a Civil Service town, is it necessary to take the CS exam in order to be employed as an Auxiliary Officer by a PD? Or is it up to the department? Thanks in advance for responses

I have never heard of any Municipality holding a test for an Aux department.

Since you are an unpaid volunteer you basically join like you would join a club.

They do conduct a background investigation and require you to go through training. Some towns require that you are a resident of the town or work in the town.

If you realy mean working as a paid reserve or a special that is a different story. I don't know what the hiring process is like but I do know it varies from town to town.

you do not need to take the civil service exam for an Aux. position.

For the NHSP the Aux candidate goes through the process....Testing, physical fitness.

The academy is I believe PT but the annual training is similar.

You might want to Look into Salisbury PD. I believe they have a program where they appoint Specials to work, especially during the summer hours. they are a civil service town; however, I don't believe that you have to take the CS exam to get on as a Special there. If I remember you have to pay the cost of the uniform and training...but it's a foot in the door and a great stepping stone.

If I am not mistaken, New Hampshire uses the word Auxiliary the way we use the term Reserve or paid special. Portsmouth New Hampshire hires part time Auxiliaries who are paid and perform many of the same functions as a regular patrolman.

Sailsberry is a very goos lead as is Hull.

To clarify some myths about auxilairy officer selection in the State: The process does vary from town to town, and some still may follow the old school "join the club" process as indicated above. Some departments, however, do have a thorough professional selection prcess.

In Framingham our selection process does have independent tests and our selection process parallells that of the department. After selection all of our recruits graduate from the Reserve Intermittant acadamy before getting a uniform. Here is an outline of our process.

Selection Process and Criteria

Dear Aux Capt,
As a former Aux in New York City and Somerville I didn't mean to disparge the selection process by infering it was like joining a club.

I am happy to see that the largest town in the nation has a complete and professional selection process.
