STOUGHTON — Police are warning residents to play it safe this July 4 and avoid setting off illegal fireworks.

That message follows on the heels of an arrest last Thursday of an Arizona man on charges of possessing and selling illegal fireworks.

“The bottom line is, we are concerned about safety,” said Executive Officer Thomas Murphy.

Police arrested Gerald Krigman, 69, of Fountain Hills on charges of unlawful possession of fireworks, unlawful selling of fireworks, and possession of a bomb-explosives.

He was arraigned Friday in Stoughton District Court. Judge Francis T. Crimmins continued the case to Aug. 24 for a pretrial hearing.

Police said detectives observed Krigman and three men gathered around a Ford van that was parked outside Zachary's Breakfast & Lunch on Washington Street at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Detectives Erik Feist and Anthony Bickerton then saw Krigman open the doors to the van, including the side door and hatchback. Inside, they saw the vehicle was packed with illegal fireworks, police said.

When the detectives confronted Krigman, he admitted he knew fireworks were illegal in Massachusetts and he was placed under arrest, police said.

Police recovered 1,200 packages of Class C fireworks with an estimated street value of $5,000. The fireworks included mortars, large rockets, Roman candles, “everything that you could think of,” Murphy said.

“Put in the wrong hands, it could cause injury,” he said.

Police also recovered a commercial bomb and fliers from Krigman's vehicle advertising his fireworks.

Murphy said police contacted the state fire marshal's office and state police.
State police transported the fireworks to a bunker in Stow, police said.

Police do not know if Krigman sold any fireworks prior to his arrest, Murphy said.
