TO CATCH A CROOK: Officers give residents of over-55 community lessons on how they do their job

By L.E. CAMPENELLA The Patriot Ledger MILTON - ‘‘What are you guys doing? I haven’t done anything,’’ Milton police Lt. William West yelled, swinging the two other officers around as the three of them locked elbows.
‘‘I don’t want to be handcuffed. What did I do?’’ West continued as the struggle made all three red-faced and sweaty.
‘‘Sir, we’ll explain everything when we get the cuffs on you,’’ officer Beth Coska said.
West dodged, spun and shouted as Coska and Sgt. Thomas Wilson tried to get the bracelets on him.
The struggle lasted several minutes, until West called a truce without the steel bands having been wrapped around his wrists.
Handcuffing: It’s one of the hardest things a cop has to do.
‘‘It’s very easy to control someone,’’ said West, a certified police academy instructor, ‘‘but it’s very hard to put handcuffs on them.’’
Case in point: Nearly 20 members of Fuller Village, a 55-and-older independent-living complex who have been attending the department’s senior citizens’ police academy, laughed yesterday as West easily avoided the cuffs that Wilson and Coska were trying to secure behind his back.
