NORWELL - Police say a drunken joyride on the North River ended in a crash that threw four young men overboard and left one with severe injuries when he was catapulted into the boat’s propeller.
The six men on the boat, from Norwell and Marshfield, had been on a Sunday outing on the river that included drinking at The Spit in Scituate - a popular boaters’ hangout and past trouble spot for public drinking - and jumping from the Bridge Street bridge in Norwell. Police found 12 unopened beer cans on the boat.
The boaters gave different accounts of how much they drank, but several said they had four to six beers each after leaving Mary’s Boat Livery in Marshfield. Police said three of the boaters were under age 21.
‘‘Reckless operation of the boat and alcohol were a factor in the accident,’’ Norwell Police Chief Theodore Ross said.
Police arrested the 22-year-old driver, John Carmark of Marshfield, and charged him with driving a boat while drunk and causing serious injury. Carmark refused a breath test, but police say he had red, glassy eyes and smelled of alcohol.
He pleaded innocent yesterday in Hingham District Court.
While it is legal to drink on a boat, a driver cannot have more than the 0.08 percent blood-alcohol limit for motor vehicles.
A 44-year-old Kingston man is on trial today in Wareham District Court in connection with the boating death of a close friend in Duxbury Bay on June 11, 2005. Scott Kirby is charged with boating homicide while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The victim was Todd Carruthers, 41, of Kingston.
