FAIRHAVEN — Police arrested a 39-year-old Fairhaven man and a 47-year-old Acushnet man for allegedly hiding a sawed-off shotgun in the bushes near a convenience store, and then threatening a bystander who complained.
Stephen Manzone, 39, of Weeden Road in Fairhaven, was arraigned Monday at New Bedford District Court for possession of a sawed-off shotgun. David Snell, of Nye's Lane in Acushnet, will be arraigned today in District Court for possession of a sawed-off shotgun and intimidation of a witness.
According to police reports, Mr. Manzone was spinning the tires of his Pontiac GTO Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of Mac's Soda Bar on Sconticut Neck Road when he lost control entering a roadway and struck a telephone phone.
Police said Mr. Manzone took a loaded sawed-off shotgun from the car and handed it to a bystander and acquaintance. Police said Mr. Snell took the gun and hid in the bushes next to Little Bay Liquors.
A bystander, knowing that the store also sells candy to children, complained to Mr. Snell about him leaving the gun there, police said. Mr. Snell allegedly told the witness to "shut up and mind your own business."
Police recovered the shotgun shortly after the incident. Mr. Manzone turned himself in at the Fairhaven Police Department Monday morning. Mr. Snell was arrested at his home by Fairhaven and Acushnet police Monday afternoon.
Mr. Manzone had previously had his license to carry firearms revoked by Chief Gary F. Souza. Police said Mr. Manzone is a cousin of selectman Chairman Ronald Manzone.
