(AP)BOSTON The Navy's guided missile destroyer USS Sampson will be commissioned in Boston later this year, Sen. John Kerry announced Monday.
The ceremony for the Sampson, built at the Bath Iron Works in Maine, will be held at the Massport Black Falcon Cruise Terminal on Saturday, Nov. 3.
The Sampson is equipped with the Aegis Combat System, which Navy officials said is the most advanced computerized defense system in the world. It includes a rapid-fire 5-inch, 62-caliber gun and Tomahawk cruise missiles.
The ship, 511 feet long and 66 feet wide, will have a crew of 25 officers and 250 enlisted men. It displaces 9,200 tons and has a top speed of more than 30 knots.
It will be the fourth Navy ship to be named after Rear Admiral William Sampson, who destroyed and captured a Spanish fleet in 1898, and the fourth Sampson commissioned in Boston. Sampson became commandant of the Boston Navy Yard in 1899 near the end of his career.
The ship's home port will be in San Diego. Its captain will be Cmdr. Philip Roos.
