2 get jail for disorderly conduct
By ROBERT SEARS
The Patriot Ledger

QUINCY - Two Quincy men whose arrests last year brought an outcry of police misconduct from the Asian community have received jail sentences.

Quan Manh Thin and Tat M. Yuen, both 28, were found guilty by a Quincy District Court jury Friday of being disorderly and were each ordered by Judge Mary Orfanello to serve 10 days of a six-month sentence.

Thin was also found guilty of resisting arrest and put on probation for two years.

Thin and Yuen were among four people arrested in April 2006 as the result of a run-in with police who used pepper spray on them.

Supporters of the defendants demonstrated at City Hall after the arrests to protest the use of the spray and what they perceived as rough handling by Quincy police.

Karen Chen, 27, of Boston, was found guilty of resisting arrest and put on probation for 18 months. She was acquitted of disorderly conduct.

Howard Ng, 27, of Somerville, was also acquitted of disorderly conduct.

The courtroom was packed with supporters of the defendants and with police officers during the four-day trial.

Supporters of the four ‘‘are totally shocked,’’ said Lydia Lowe, executive director of the Chinese Progressive Association in Boston.

‘‘They’re guilty of nothing but being in the wrong place at the wrong time,’’ she said.

‘‘That these young people should end up in jail, and three of them should end up on probation with a permanent criminal record is totally unjust,’’ she said.

‘‘Do I think there is racism involved?- Yes,’’ she said.

Oh, cry me a river please. Why doesn't one of them put on a brown seersucker suit, grow their hair long and spike it to become the next "Reverand Al" for the Asain community. They took their chances by going to trial & lost.
Unless they want to appeal it, end of story. Next time, move on people and do what the nice Police Officer and Trooper says and it won't happen again.

I would assert there are those that wear blue and those that don't.

This is the only time in nearly 20 years of being a cop I've seen someone with no record get committed time for a disorderly conviction. They and the Chinese Progressive Association wanted to turn the court proceedings into a three-ring circus, and they paid the price for it.

The most sad thing of all is that we have an excellent relationship with the Asian community, and these rabble rousers did everything they could to destroy it, in order to excuse drunken belligerance.

This topic is sooo ripe for ridicule...but lets not go there. I'm sure that Miss Chen, at 27 YOA, has a ton of life experience to inform her assessment of "racism".</IMG>
