MARSHFIELD - The longtime head custodian at Marshfield High School will soon face charges of stealing equipment from the school and collecting overtime pay when he was not working, police say.
Police have filed an application for a criminal complaint in Plymouth District Court against Wayne Bearce for fraudulent overtime claims and larceny of equipment. Bearce will be summoned to court on two charges of larceny of property over $250.
Police allege that Bearce, 58, ordered power tools, landscape equipment and supplies for the school and removed them or never delivered them. They say he also put in overtime claims when he did not work.
The annual town report for 2006 shows that Bearce more than doubled his salary in overtime that year, with $42,813 in regular pay and $39,183 in overtime. With $9,268 of other pay for things such as uniform allowance, he earned $91,264. Other custodians earned $67,000, with overtime and other pay.
Police analyzed overtime sheets and saw that Bearce allegedly often worked at the same time as other custodians and their activities were identical. But other custodians did not remember his presence at those shifts, a search warrant affidavit said.
Police interviewed other custodians at the school and reviewed minutes of meetings of the Marshfield Lodge of Elks, where Bearce serves as a trustee. Elks meeting minutes show Bearce was there during at least some hours he claimed to be working overtime at the school, the affidavit says.
Bearce could not be reached for comment Friday. Marshfield Superintendent Middleton McGoodwin would not discuss the issue.
Marshfield Police Lt. Phillip Tavares, who led the investigation, referred questions to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office.
