Authorities: Woman Provided Daughter, Niece To Ex-Mayor

WATERBURY, Conn. -- A Waterbury woman who provided two young girls to have sex with former Mayor Philip Giordano has been sentenced to 10 years on state charges.

The 36-year-old woman, who would bring her young daughter and niece to various locations including Giordano's office, was sentenced in Superior Court Thursday.

Judge Joan Alexander gave her the sentence to serve concurrently with the 10 year federal sentence for her role in the child sex case.
Giordano, 44, was convicted in U.S. District Court in 2003 of violating two girls' civil rights by paying a crack-addicted prostitute to bring her daughter and niece to him for sexual encounters in 2000 and 2001.

Giordano got a 37-year sentence in federal prison. Earlier this month, he accepted a plea agreement in Superior Court that called for him to receive 18 years in prison after he pleaded no contest to forcing the two young girls, who were 8 and 10 at the time, to perform oral sex on him. The federal and state sentences will run together.

The woman who provided the girls to Giordano agreed to cooperate with federal authorities and pleaded guilty to the charges. She faced up to 40 years. In September 2002, she was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. Her local case moved forward after Giordano accepted a plea agreement early this month.

State's Attorney John A. Connelly said Thursday the woman lived up to the cooperative agreement she had with federal prosecutors to testify at Giordano's trial.

The woman will continue to serve time in federal prison. Her earliest release date will be May 2010 with three years of supervised provision and registering as a sex offender for 10 years.
