LAWRENCE, Mass. - An off-duty Lawrence police officer is facing drunken driving and other charges after leading police from a neighboring community on a chase that reached speeds of 90 mph, authorities said.
Sgt. Ryan Shafer, 31, who is out on medical leave, was picked up by fellow Lawrence officers at his home following Thursday’s incident.
He was charged with drunken driving and ordered by the court to spend the next 10 days in a detox program.
Methuen police started following Shafer just before 3 a.m. on Thursday, according to official documents. He was pursued through city streets and onto Interstate 495 before police broke off the chase. He was traced through his license plate number.
Shafer, an 8-year veteran of the force, was arraigned on charges of drunken driving, failure to stop for a police officer, driving to endanger, speeding, failure to stay in marked lanes, running a red light, and emitting harsh and objectionable noises from a motor vehicle.
His driver’s license was revoked for 180 days.
Chief John Romero said Shafer has been on leave for about two months for medical reasons he did not disclose. He was placed on paid administrative leave following Thursday’s incident.
