DARTMOUTH — Three law enforcement officers and their K-9 partners graduated from narcotics and patrol academies in a ceremony at the Bristol County House of Corrections Thursday.
K-9 training is conducted in two stages. The first is patrol training. Over 16 weeks, the officer and the animal learn to work as a team. The dogs develop tracking and obedience skills.
"Throughout the training, the officers are also learning," academy chief trainer Derek Alves said. "They learn their individual dog's posture, how it carries its ears. They learn how to read their dogs, so that they'll know right away if something's wrong."
Police Officer Jared P. Salinaro and his dog, Vasko, from the North Smithfield, R.I., police department, and Bristol County Corrections Officer Anthony M. Pereira and his dog, Jimy, graduated from the patrol training section.
Officer Pereira said he and Jimy will be assigned to search for missing children and track criminals involved in local break-ins and burglaries. Once a K-9 patrol dog has exhibited drive through playing and tracking, it may then qualify for narcotics training.
This second stage of training spans 10 weeks. Coventry, R.I., Police Officer Bryan M. Ricci and his K-9 partner Enzo graduated Thursday from the narcotics academy.
In learning from each other, a bond develops.
"The dogs that these officers bring home become a part of their families," Bristol County Sheriff Thomas M. Hodgson said. The officers agree.
"We're very close," Officer Pereira said. "That's my partner. Wherever he goes, I go."
"If I'm ever away from him for too long, I'll call to check up," Officer Salinaro said. "I miss the barking."
