NEW BEDFORD — Two reputed Monte Park gang members with lengthy criminal records will remain in jail following dangerousness hearings Thursday in New Bedford District Court. The defendants, Aaron Adams, 25, and Manuel Silva, 24, both of New Bedford, were arrested last Friday for allegedly threatening a court magistrate, hours after a judge had released them on personal recognizance during their arraignment on drug charges. Yesterday, a judge ordered the defendants incarcerated, agreeing with the prosecution's argument that the men pose a serious threat to the community and the magistrate. Under the dangerousness statute, the men can be held for 90 days, during which the district attorney's office must be prepared to take them to trial. "That's just what we wanted,' said Bristol County District Attorney C. Samuel Sutter, who was in Boston Thursday testifying before the Joint Committee on the Judiciary regarding legislation to toughen penalties for firearms violence. Last Friday, Assistant District Attorney Stephen Butts argued vigorously for District Court Judge David Turcotte to revoke bail for Mr. Silva and Mr. Adams. Police had arrested the defendants the day before during a drug bust in the area of Grinnell and Purchase streets. Police said they seized crack cocaine and cash from Mr. Silva and cash from Mr. Adams. The defendants had pending drug possession cases when they were arrested last Thursday According to court records, they threatened Cynthia Rose, a court magistrate at the Ash Street Jail, after she told the men Thursday night that she was placing them on $30,000 bail. A police report indicates Mr. Silva told Ms. Rose: "We're going to get you!," "Who do you think you are?" and "You are going to be embarrassed when we get off in court." When Ms. Rose later walked by the defendants again, they allegedly shouted, "We're going to get you for this." Ms. Rose filed a complaint Friday morning at District Court.
