Catalytic Converter With Explosive Device Not Found

HAVERHILL, N.H. -- Police in Haverhill said Wednesday that they found dozens of car parts stolen from a New Hampshire scrapyard, but not the explosive device they were looking for.

The device was believed to be in a business called Specialized Metals on Route 110. On Wednesday, New Hampshire state police said that they were looking into the possible theft of several catalytic converters, including one believed to have an explosive device in it.

The owner of a scrapyard in Milton Mills told police Wednesday that he was taking apart a car when he placed an explosive device in a catalytic converter. He said that he discovered later that the converters had been stolen.

"Our investigation led us down to this facility here in Haverhill, Mass.," Detective Sgt. Richard Mitchell said. "We were looking for a primer to detonate a military explosive charge."

The owner of the Haverhill business said that he had just bought 35 catalytic converters, which police said were some of the converters stolen in New Hampshire.
