CONCORD, N.H. -- The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office has opened an investigation into whether presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's staff might have made an illegal traffic stop, the same day a group of conservative activists with a connection to rival Sen. John McCain complained Thursday.
ConserveNH President Paul Nagy wrote a letter to Attorney General Kelly Ayotte asking her to check if Romney aides illegally stopped a New York Times reporter, checked his license plate against a database and overstepped their role.
"We want attention to the indiscretion," said Nagy, who said he is not supporting a candidate. "I think there is a bunch of arrogance involved in this. We just don't do that to guests when they visit our state during the presidential primary season."

One of ConserveNH's founder, Patrick Hynes, works for McCain's political action committee, Straight Talk America.
Nagy said the letter was sent independently of the McCain campaign and said he was unaware that Hynes is on McCain's payroll.
"I know nothing about that. I could not tell you who any of the members of the board are supporting," said Nagy, who is a critic of McCain's immigration plan.
McCain's New Hampshire spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker flatly denied any connection between the campaign and the letter.
"You would be hard-pressed not to find a McCain supporter in just about any New Hampshire organization. Mr. Nagy's statement speaks for itself," she said.
Romney's campaign on Wednesday denied a report that aides pulled over Times reporter Mark Leibovich, who was trailing the former Massachusetts governor's caravan in New Hampshire, checked his license plates and told him to leave.
"I can confirm that we were asked to look into the matter," said Jane Young, chief of the criminal justice bureau at the Attorney General's Office. "We are officially looking into the matter."
She declined to discuss the status of the investigation.
Romney does not have state-provided protection or a Secret Service detail. He does, however, travel between appearances in a motorcade of black sport utility vehicles and his aides wear earpieces.
New Hampshire law does not allow private citizens to access to license plate databases, nor allow them to pull over fellow citizens.

Today's Boston Globe reports another incident, this one in Massachusetts involved a Romney aide who allegedly presented himself in a phone conversation as a state trooper. That investigation is still underway. The Globe indicates that the suspected cop impersonator, Jay Garrity, had been cited in the past for having unauthorized strobe, red and blue lights, siren and a "Mass State Police" sign on his car while working for Romney some time ago. The report goes on the say Garrity is the target also in the New Hampshire probe.

I have seen the guy this story refers too. I encountered him at a few functions when Romney was Governor. Im my opinion, he is a secret service/executive security/special agent wannabe. His job when with the Governor was to make sure things like the sound systems, settings, etc were ready, NOT do advance work for security. If you saw him, you could picture a giant 'W' on his forehead.....

Making Mitt Romney Look Good

Tax dollars at work: Mitt's $350G Image Team.
Massachusetts taxpayers are shelling out at least $350,000 a year for a cadre of aides whose chief duty is to make Gov. - and possible presidential candidate - Mitt Romney look spiffy during public appearances.
The 13-person staff of the newly expanded Governor's Office of Operations has taken over a warren of rooms in the State House basement previously occupied by the Legislature.
Led by "director of operations'' Jay Garrity, 27, the squad is responsible for ensuring Romney has the proper lighting at events, his microphone works and there are enough chairs for attendees.
Romney aides steadfastly insist the operation is not political - despite its resemblance to a campaign advance team.
A Herald review of expenses charged to taxpayers by Romney's 13- member Office of Operations shows the staff spent $24,974 on sound equipment last year, and another $14,429 for a lighting system for a Romney event.
In February, the team relocated to a suite in the basement of the State House. The door is affixed with the number "LXX," Roman numerals for 70, because Romney is the 70th Bay State governor.
Some office staff, who all wear LXX pins, fashion themselves as U.S. Secret Service agents, referring to Romney in their earpieces and audio-equipped wrist pieces as "70" - similar to the way the Secret Service agents identify President Bush as "43" because he is the 43rd president.

Romney Aide Takes Leave Amid Impersonation Accusation Last Edited: Friday, 22 Jun 2007, 6:58 PM EDT Republican presidential hopeful, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt RomneyBy GLEN JOHNSON
Associated Press Writer
BOSTON -- An ever-present aide to Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney took a leave of absence Friday after he became the subject of investigations in two states for allegedly impersonating a law enforcement officer.

His attorney denied the charges.

Jay Garrity, who serves as director of operations and is constantly at the side of the former Massachusetts governor, is accused of leaving a lengthy message with the answering service of a plumbing company on Mother's Day, identifying himself as "Trooper Garrity" of the Massachusetts State Police and complaining about erratic driving by a company driver.

The district attorney in Boston is investigating the call, which was tape recorded by an after-hours operator. Impersonating an officer is a misdemeanor charge carrying a fine of up to $400 and one year imprisonment.

"Listening to the message, it sounded like he was calling control and speaking back and forth to people," said Dot Barme, whose Burlington company, Wayne's Drains, received the call. "I had my husband listen to it and he said, 'He's not talking to anybody; he's talking back and forth to himself," Barme told The Associated Press.

Stephen Jones, an attorney representing Garrity, said his client did not make the May 13 call, first reported by The Boston Globe, and has no connection with the cell phone to which it was traced.

"He has insisted since he's heard about this to have a voice analysis done to exonerate him or prove he did not do this," Jones said.

Jake Wark, spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley, confirmed the investigation.

"We're looking into a phone call placed to an area business by an individual who represented himself as a state trooper," Wark said. "We do not believe the person who made that call is a state trooper and we are working to determine his identity."

Meanwhile, Garrity also has been accused of telling a New York Times reporter who had been following Romney's motorcade in New Hampshire last month that he had run the license plate of the reporter's rental car, and that he should break away from the caravan.

The New Hampshire attorney general's office is investigating that incident after the reporter, Mark Leibovich, recounted the May 29 events in a story about Romney last weekend. New Hampshire law prohibits citizens from accessing the state's license plate database.

"Jay has taken a leave of absence from the campaign to address these complaints," said Romney spokesman Kevin Madden.

Jones, the Garrity attoqrney, disputed the seuence of events. Leibovich has stood by his version of the story.

In 2004, Garrity was cited and fined by Massachusetts officials after a Ford Crown Victoria registered to him was found to have lights, a siren, radios and other law enforcement equipment -- including a baton -- after it was parked illegally in Boston's North End. At the time, Garrity was paid $75,000 annually as Romney's gubernatorial chief of operations. Copyright 2007 Associated Press. All rights reserved. I remember hearing about when they found that idiot's crown vic parked in front of a hydrant or something.... what a clown

I'm voting for Thompson.

Personally, I think Romney's a long shot as president, I'm hoping McCain, Giulliani, or Thompson makes it.

This nitwit has wannabe written all over him. Considering he was caught previously with a wannabe-mobile with fake MSP id's, and he's on tape for the most previous incident, he should be man enough to admit it.

And his license expired in May...non renewable, unpaid parking tickets in Boston. Says he has a "federal permit" for emergency lights etc. on his vehicle and, according to a report, on "paid leave" from the Romney campaign. I think we have identified our next head of the CIA!!!

You can tell a lot about a candidate by the people he surrounds himself with. And so the aide who became known during the Romney administration as “Mini Mitt” - however low on the campaign totem pole - has already done a grave disservice to his boss.
Jay Garrity has taken a leave of absence from his post as “director of operations” for the Romney campaign. Meanwhile officials here and in New Hampshire are checking out allegations that Garrity: (1) pulled over a reporter from the New York Times [NYT] who had been following the Romney motorcade in New Hampshire, telling him he had “run” his license plate and that he should leave the entourage; and (2) called a Burlington company to complain about one of their drivers but identified himself as “Trooper Garrity.”
As Garrity contemplates his future during this hiatus might we make one suggestion? Somewhere there’s a mall and a uniform just looking for a guy like him.

Romney backs campaign aide under probe by two states
By Associated Press
Tuesday, June 26, 2007

Republican Mitt Romney said yesterday he supports a top aide under investigation in two states for impersonating a law enforcement officer, “but this really is now in his hands.”
The former Massachusetts governor, in his first public comments on the case, described Jay Garrity as “a good guy.”
Before taking a leave of absence last Friday, Garrity was Romney’s “director of operations” and constant traveling companion, shepherding Romney between appointments and controlling access.
“I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt on this and I think other people would be wise to do the same thing,” Romney told reporters. “He’s a good guy and wish him the very best, but this is really now in his hands.”
Garrity is under investigation in Massachusetts after a caller identifying himself as “Trooper Garrity” of the State Police left a lengthy message with a plumbing company, complaining about erratic driving by an employee. Impersonating an officer is a misdemeanor charge carrying a fine of up to $400 and one year imprisonment.
Garrity is also under investigation in New Hampshire, where he is accused of telling a New York Times [NYT] reporter he had run his license plate and that he should stop following Romney’s vehicles.

Ohh wait, maybe this guy is the guy who's supposed to do the background checks.
