It didn’t take long for a group of Las Vegas-based magazine subscription salesmen to wear out their welcome in Braintree. The police department yanked the group’s permit to sell subscriptions door-to-door less than 48 hours after approving it.

Police are now asking residents to notify them if they see the salespeople peddling their wares.

Deputy Police Chief Kevin McHugh said the company, Freedom Sales Inc., allowed a salesperson with a checkered past to sell in Braintree, despite being told by police he couldn’t.

‘‘This type of company - by law - we have to allow in town, as long as they abide by the rules,’’ McHugh said. ‘‘This company chose not to follow the rules.’’

Braintree police require companies seeking to sell products door-to-door to submit a list of names of their sales staff. Police then run background checks, looking for anyone with outstanding warrants or questionable pasts. The idea, McHugh said, is to keep convicted thieves or sex offenders from knocking on doors.

In Plymouth, in July 2004, a door-to-door magazine salesman from Chicago who had a lengthy criminal record raped a retarded Plymouth woman while on a sales call.

Just days later, a 17-year-old saleswoman, also from Chicago, was arrested after stealing a check from another home in Plymouth.
