ACUSHNET — Acushnet Police Officer Brian Humenuk spotted a break-in in progress while on routine patrol at the Pope Park Concession stand Sunday.
He arrested Roland Goncalves, 18, of Pilgrim Way, New Bedford, and Gregory Hielckert, 19, of Arnold Street, New Bedford, on charges of breaking and entering. A third individual, a juvenile, was also arrested.
Police said Officer Humenuk interrupted the suspects as they were packing stolen items from the concession stand into bags. The trio took off and ran toward the Wamsutta Avenue neighborhood, where they fled in two cars.
Detective Paul Melo stopped one of the fleeing vehicles, and the second vehicle was located a short time later.
Officer Michael Matton assisted Detective Melo and Officer Humenuk in the arrest.
Officers observed damage to the concession stand and to the Park Department garage. Most of the property was recovered at the scene; however, some of the items are still missing.
The three individuals were charged with two counts of breaking and entering in the nighttime, larceny over $250 and destruction of property over $250.
