Coach’s rape trial begins Arana By DENNIS TATZ The Patriot Ledger BROCKTON - The lawyer for a former high school soccer coach accused of raping two young sisters plans to call the girls’ parents as witnesses at his trial, which begins today.
The couple will be asked to testify about a $5 million suit they have filed against Jose Arana, who was removed as soccer coach at all-girls Notre Dame Academy in Hingham after he was charged with rape, and his estranged wife.
Defense attorney Patricia Downey told Judge Charles Grabau yesterday in Brockton Superior Court that she wants the parents of the girls to testify.
The alleged rape occurred in July 2004 at a sleep-over party at the Duxbury home of Arana’s wife. The girls were 14 and 15 at the time.
Arana, 44, allegedly gave alcohol to his daughter and four other teenage girls on the night of the party. He and his wife, Susan, were living apart and she was out of the country.
The civil suit by the parents of the alleged victims states that the Aranas had previously given alcohol to minors at their home. The suit is on hold until after the criminal trial.
Grabau refused yesterday to allow a constable hired by the defense to serve subpoenas on the parents in the office of the Plymouth County district attorney, where they were awaiting the start of the trial.
