By ROBERT SEARS The Patriot Ledger RANDOLPH - A husband and wife have been arrested on charges they assaulted their 8-month-old daughter, leaving her with 18 bone fractures.
Leslie D. Medina, 20, and Leonard Medina, 21, of 34 Hollis St., are charged with three counts of assault and battery on a child resulting in substantial injury and permitting substantial injury to a child.
They were arrested Friday and pleaded innocent in Quincy District Court.
The baby has been placed in a foster home.
Police said a doctor at Harvard Vanguard in Braintree who saw the baby for a routine checkup became concerned that she was not gaining weight.
The doctor also noticed she was uncomfortable when he held her, putting weight on her legs, the report said.
The doctor ordered X-rays and the bone fractures were found.
A pediatric radiologist at Boston Medical Center reviewed the X-rays and said some of the fractures were consistent with twisting injuries, the report said.
Police became aware of the injuries when doctors at Children’s Hospital Boston, where the baby had been referred, notified them the injuries were consistent with abuse.
Doctors had ruled out a series of medical conditions that could result in bone fractures, the police report said.
Detectives interviewed the Medinas, who live with her mother, on May 18.
They said they did not know how the baby had been injured, the police report said. Leslie Medina said learning of the injuries had been a shock to both her and her husband. Both parents work part time at South Shore Plaza stores, and told police they were able to care for the child without assistance from others.
Police arrested the couple on Friday after conducting a second round of interviews.
