(WBZ)SCITUATE Bob Kingsland and his family received quite the sendoff in Situate as their dream boat was put into the water. "Restless," a 50-foot cutter, was made by Kingsland's own two hands. It took 28 years, and a lot of heart, but after 200 gallons of epoxy, 35 miles of welding wires and tons of back-breaking labor, Kingsland's dream has finally come true.
With a proud grin on his face, Kingsland, 60, helped hoist flags and do some last minute cleaning-up on his boat Saturday, right before it was towed into the water in front of hundreds of people. This was the moment he has been envisioning for almost three decades.
So what took Kingsland so long? Why did it take him almost 30 years to construct the boat of his dreams? There is one word to answer that: family. Although "Restless" was a huge undertaking, Kingsland said he made sure it did not consume his life. He put family first and that's why the boat's construction took as long as it did. "If you want to savor it and have a decent life while you're doing it, then it is going to take a little longer."
As the moment to send Kingsland's creation into the harbor drew closer, hundreds of supporters who knew his story began to gather at the pier to cheer him on. As he weaved through the crowds, he basked in the excitement of the moment and laughed with some who joked about him finally finishing. "You know, when you take 28 years to do something like this, there are some questions of whether or not it's going to happen," he said.
The journey to this day was not always smooth sailing, though. There were some moments, Kingsland said, when he had to slow down. Those days he did not do much to "Restless." He recalled a time when he had to just let the boat be for a while. During that time, Kingsland just spent time with his family -- enjoying the water.
So after spending half a lifetime handcrafting his dream boat, "Restless" finally took on a life of its own. After so much time on dry land, the boat is finally docked where it belongs -- in Scituate Harbor. "At some point, maybe it's with the paint, maybe it's right now with the flags, but the boat comes alive. And today's the day for this old girl -- and it's an exciting day."
