Woman Donned Disguises While Swindling Bank Customers
GREENBELT, Md. -- A Massachusetts woman dubbed the "Wig Lady" because she donned disguises while swindling bank customers pleaded guilty Thursday to bank fraud and aggravated identity theft in U.S. District Court.
Carol Silva, 55, used stolen credit cards, checks, account numbers, driver's license and social security cards to steal up to $30,000 from 10 people in the Washington area between March 2006 and July 2006. She faces a maximum sentence of 32 years in prison when she is sentenced on Aug. 29.
Authorities believe Silva was part of a larger ring that would pick women's pockets or steal their personal belongings from places like supermarkets or the Washington Metro transit system.
Silva would then appear at area banks, often wearing a wig or glasses to impersonate the victims. She sometimes altered personal identifications, substituting her own picture, according to the plea agreement.
Using their stolen personal information, she would withdraw money directly from their accounts. She would also sometimes deposit money from one victim's account to another's, then withdraw the cash.
Silva was arrested in Boston in November. Another woman, Jacqueline Belim, 46, of Capitol Heights, also pleaded guilty to the same charges in April. Belim's husband and the alleged ringleader, Charles Belim, remains at large.
