GREENVILLE, S.C. --
A Greenville County deputy talked Wednesday about his close call that was caught on camera.
Deputy Will Richter sat down in the WYFF 4 newsroom for an interview with Inside Edition, and he also talked with News 4's Mark Allen.
Richter spoke publicly about the incident for the first time. He and another deputy had just pulled over a car for speeding on Interstate 385 near the Rope Mountain Road exit early Saturday morning.
Richter was standing near the driver's side door when a passing car came way too close. The car's tires struck both of his heels and scraped the back of his legs. His knees also were bruised and he has a very large abrasion on the back of his thigh from the car's side view mirror.
"I never heard the car coming," Richter said. "I just heard a loud whoosh. And then I heard breaking glass, and I just felt extreme pain."
The whole incident was caught on Richter's dash camera.
"I'm definitely very lucky and I'm thankful that i didn't get hurt any worse than I did," he said.
The car that hit Richter never stopped. The video was sent to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division in Columbia in hopes of identifying the vehicle and maybe even the license plate number.
Greenville County sheriff's Lt. Shea Smith said, "In other cases we have had success in determining the actual tag number of the vehicle so we're hopeful that in this case that will happen again."
Richter said that he hopes he'll be back on the job soon, but he's not likely to forget the close call anytime soon.
"I think it will be going through my mind, but at the same time it will renew my strength to go out there and get DUI drivers and aggressive drivers off of the roadway," he said.
