ULLIN, Ill. --
Police used tear gas to force 46 inmates out of a prison area where they had barricaded themselves and set fire to mattresses and books, authorities said.
The Pulaski County state's attorney is considering charges against the inmates involved in the hour-long disturbance Friday at the Tri-County Justice and Detention Center in southern Illinois.
There were no major injuries from the disturbance at the medium-security facility. The inmates were held in separate areas after they were removed from the barricaded area, said Pulaski County Sheriff Randy Kern.
Local law enforcement "were able to bring the disturbance under control within 30 minutes," said Pablo Paez, a spokesman for the GEO Group, which owns the facility. He said authorities had inmates back in housing units within an hour.
The 226-bed facility, which houses male and female inmates, was not significantly damaged, Paez said. GEO Group is based in Boca Raton, Fla.
A message left with the Pulaski County state's attorney's office was not returned Sunday.
