Autopsy report said death caused by excited delirium

The Associated Press
MESA, Ariz. — A mixture of methamphetamine and poor health caused the death of a Mesa man who police shocked with a Taser stun gun Feb. 11, the Maricopa County medical examiner said.
An autopsy report released Wednesday said Steven J. Krohn's death was caused by excited delirium, a controversial condition characterized by a person's heart shutting down because it cannot handle a stressful event.
Other causes were listed as methamphetamine intoxication, obesity and hypertensive cardiovascular disease, the report said.
The death was accidental, the report states.
According to an inventory of items found in Krohn's car, investigators found white powdery and white crystalline substances in the glove box.
Krohn's family said he was a 44-year-old bachelor who had no criminal history, no history of drug abuse or alcoholism and no history of mental illness. He lived with his brother and his family.
Mesa police said it received three 911 calls about 2:35 p.m. Feb. 11 reporting a man was behaving strangely, hitting parked cars, exposing himself and lying down in a yard.
Officers arrived on the scene with information that he might be armed with knives. They found him in a neighbor's car, according to a search warrant affidavit. Krohn refused to get out of his car.
A police report said Krohn refused to get out of the car, made a furtive move and an officer then fired his Taser. As officers tried to handcuff Krohn, he began fighting with them and they shocked him again, but it appeared to have no effect.
One of the probes became dislodged in the struggle, the warrant states. Krohn continued to fight with police and then became limp. He was pronounced dead about an hour later at a Mesa hospital. The autopsy report listed abrasions and two broken ribs among his injuries.
