OAKLAND, Calif. — A man suspected of shooting and wounding an Oakland police motorcycle officer was in custody this morning after surrendering in Sacramento, authorities said.
Jesse William Mendez, 26, gave up shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday at a home in Sacramento after being surrounded by Sacramento and Oakland police, authorities said.
Police said Mendez shot Officer Kevin McDonald at about 12:20 a.m. May 19 after the officer had pulled over a yellow Chevrolet Camaro whose driver ran a stop sign on MacArthur Boulevard near Parker Avenue in East Oakland.
McDonald was wearing his bullet-resistant vest and escaped major injury.
Mendez and his cousin, Jeremiah Dye, 22, of San Lorenzo fled after the shooting, police said. Several hours later, Officer Robert Roche shot and killed Dye during a confrontation as the suspect hid in a crawl space beneath a house on the 2600 block of Parker, police said.
Mendez has convictions for theft and possession for sale of a controlled substance, according to Alameda County court records. He also was arrested in 2005 for DUI, but the case was dismissed, records show.
