AURORA, COLORADO (NBC) - A Colorado man survived a shooting at his home Tuesday morning, thanks in part to his cell phone, which slowed a bullet before it hit his chest. Roger Baxter, a Colorado Department of Transportation employee who lost his legs after a semi going 70 mph hit him on I-70 last October, was shot in the chest after interrupting a burglary. "I was in a coma for a little under a month, went through 13 operations, lost my legs," said Baxter. "I'm here."
The incident happened shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday in Baxter's home in the 19,100 block of East Nassau Drive. Baxter came home to find a man in his home and yelled at him to get out of his house. "I thought it was pretty low of him to take and try to rob a disabled person," said Baxter. Instead of leaving, Baxter says the man tried to kill him. "I thought he was probably dead after I heard the shot," said his wife, Deb Baxter.
Baxter, who has spent the past seven months learning to live with a wheelchair and crutches, wasn't going to go that easily. "There he is trying to call 911 he says, 'Get me a towel, I'm bleeding,'" said Deb. "It's like, 'Oh my God.'" Despite being shot in the chest Tuesday, the hospital released him, saying he was in good condition. "It hit me in the cell phone, went through the cell phone, and projected down and grazed me," said Baxter.
Baxter had the phone in his left shirt pocket, over his heart. "It's not my time," said Baxter. "It wasn't my time when I got hit by that semi in October. Aurora Police say the shooter, along with a second suspect who they say was acting as a lookout, fled the scene, but were later arrested. Their identities were not immediately released.
Several Cherry Creek schools were under what was called a 'secured perimeter' while police looked for the burglary suspects Tuesday morning. Before taking the suspects into custody, Horizon Middle School, Summit Elementary, Sunrise Elementary and Cimarron Elementary in addition to other schools were on a 'secured perimeter.' All students and staff members were brought inside the school and exterior doors were locked. Staff members controlled access in and out of the school and parents with proper identification were allowed to pick up their students.
Baxter, however, was left with the feeling he must still be alive for a reason. "I'm here to do something," said Baxter. "I'm gonna do it." "We're gonna have to get him a titanium suit so nothing happens to him," said Deb.
