KNOB NOSTER, Mo. (AP) - The driver of a stolen pickup truck attempted to flee police and crashed into a tree along a highway, killing himself and his two young passengers, authorities said Monday.

A police officer had stopped Walter R. Rivers, 31, of Warrensburg, for speeding early Sunday, but he drove off before the officer approached the truck, Knob Noster authorities said.

The officer chased the vehicle on state Highway 23 for about two miles before the driver apparently lost control as he crested a hill and struck a fence and a tree, police said.

Rivers, his girlfriend's son, Stephen K. Hayes, 13, and his friend, Christian Lackey, 12, both of Warrensburg, were all pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

"They were going to get a part for an Xbox. Wal-Mart here didn't have it, so they were going to Sedalia," Hayes' mother, Rebecca Hughs, told KMBC-TV.

Lackey's aunt, Carolyn Johnson, said she has a lot of questions, including why the boys were riding around with Rivers so early in the morning.

"That mother put that man with those two little boys in a stolen truck. Police chased him. Why didn't the police back off?" Johnson asked.

The investigation is ongoing. Police said Rivers had numerous stolen credit cards with him.

Gee, I don't know Ms Johnson, maybe the cop thought that the guy might have been kidnapping the kids since he took off from a relatively trivial motor vehicle offense? But no, according to High Commissioner Johnson here just back off and let the bloodhounds find their molested corpses later. Always the cops fault, not the felon who lit the fuse on this whole thing. Frickin' pathetic.

Stopping for the police is also a good option.
