BROCKTON — The annual Memorial Day parade is being dedicated to a city police officer who died in the line of duty a year ago.
Joseph Sutherland, who was 59 when he was stricken while on duty in March 2006, was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War where he received three Purple Hears after being wounded during the 1968 Tet Offensive.
He later served in the Army Reserves, retiring as a first sergeant from the 187th Support Battalion.
Sutherland will be honored during the parade and accompanying ceremonies that mark Memorial Day.
Police and fire department color guards followed by the Brockton High School Band will lead the line of march that leaves the War Memorial Building on West Elm Street at 10:30 a.m. and proceed through local streets to VFW Parkway for a ceremony.
Included in the line of march will be veterans organizations, city councilors, the Brockton Veterans Council, the Plymouth County Sheriff's Department, ROTC groups from Brockton and Brighton high schools, boy and girl scouts, the VFW Post 1046 color guard, the Cosmo Legion Band, Boston City Band.
Other events on Monday include a flag ceremony at 2 p.m. at the VA Hospital, 940 Belmont St., and prior to the parade, services at Melrose Cemetery beginning at 7:30 a.m. and the laying of wreaths at VFW Parkway and City Hall Plaza at 8 a.m
