Is a FLETC academy accepted by the MPTC?

Posted by: MtBiker

I know this thread is old but it is new to me and I see that no one responded so I will. The short answer is maybe. FLETC encompasses many agencies training programs so there is not one answer. If you are refering to mixed basic police training program, most likely it will be accepted. You would probably have to take and pass a MA law exam but the other stuff is pretty muich the same. The only way to know for sure is to submit the syllabus from the particular FLETC training program for review.

Most local and state agencies in New England make you go through their academy, whichever it may be, again. Mostly for camaraderie. Mostly because they're all stubborn. But do as MtBiker suggested...you never know.

Attach your bill from Pam's for extra credit!

What agency did you go through FLETC for? It depends.

I think the main issue is MA is the training hours of whatever academy you are trying to transfer credit for. I believe that FLETC alone is a much shorter time that a traditional MA academy. I know that most federal agencies that don't have their own academy (i.e. FBI), require FLETC in additon to a firearms portion and whatever additional training that agency might have. Best of luck.

MPTC Exemptions

Advisory
A person who has been employed as a municipal police officer in another state and is being hired in Massachusetts may qualify for a Permanent Exemption from recruit training.
In order to determine whether they might qualify for this, an individual may request an Advisory letter. To request such a letter, an individual needs to submit the following paperwork to the Exemptions Coordinator for review:An Advisory letter will be provided to the transferring police officer and will contain a statement that would suggest a favorable or unfavorable Permanent Exemption would be forthcoming. This letter could be forwarded to a police department chief and/or the appointing authority, who would apply for a Permanent Exemption on behalf of the police officer.
Permanent Exemption
When a person from out-of-state has been hired by a Massachusetts municipal police department on a full-time basis and has already been through a Basic Recruit program in their state, they may be qualified for a Permanent Exemption from our own basic academy. The application for a Permanent Exemption must be filed by the appointing authority of the employing municipal department and must be accompanied by the following:Temporary Exemption
A temporary exemption may be granted for a period not to exceed 270 days, or until the start date of the next available academy session, whichever occurs sooner, as a result of a documented public safety emergency or other exigent circumstances. Again, the application must be filed by the appointing authority of the employing agency and the following documentation must accompany the application :
