(WBZ)BOSTON The Boston police officer shot in Dorchester earlier this week has been released from the hospital.
Officer Stephen Romero, 41, who works on the Youth Violence Strike Force, was wounded in a shoot-out at 35 Westville Street near the John Marshall Elementary School around 9:50 p.m. Wednesday.
21-year-old Antonio Franklin of Roxbury was arraigned from his hospital bed on charges related to the shooting of a Boston police officer.
Officers confronted the alleged gang member, who tried to ride away on a bike. After a brief chase, police say Antonio Franklin fired a gun and hit officer Romano in the chest. He was wounded in a spot where he did not have protection from his bullet-proof vest.
A state trooper who is also part of the task force returned fire and hit Franklin.
A second suspect escaped.
Police Commissioner Ed Davis said the actions of Officer Romano and others on the Strike Force prevented a potentially deadly gang encounter in the streets.
"This incident was not a surprise to us," said Davis. "This is an on-going encounter between the Castlegate group and the group at Bowdoin and Geneva (streets)."
Romano was treated and released from Boston Medical Center.
Franklin is in critical but stable condition at Beth Israel Deaconness Medical Center. He is being held on $250,000 cash bail following his arraignment at Beth Israel on charges of armed assault to murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Glad Romero is alright. Kudos to the MSP guy for his actions...........
