Fallen Deputy's Widow Raps Commissioner

AUBURN, Maine -- The widow of a fallen sheriff's deputy is speaking out about statements made by an Androscoggin County official that she says dragged her late husband into a nasty political battle.
Dawn Rancourt is upset that County Commissioner Elmer Berry brought her husband's good name into a dispute with the sheriff over the hiring of a new deputy.

Dave Rancourt died last year in a diving accident. Eight of his fellow officers took four days off last week to attend law enforcement memorial services in Washington DC and Augusta.

Commissioner Berry said the fact that so many men were given the time off shows the sheriff's department is not understaffed and in need of a new deputy.

Berry made a public apology to the Rancourt family earlier in the week. But Rancourt says she would have preferred a personal apology.

"I would have gotten over it if I'd gotten an apology, other than I happened to watch the 6:00 news and I happened to hear Elmer Berry apologize to me," said Dawn Rancourt.

Late Friday afternoon, Commissioner Berry said he already left Dawn Rancourt one message earlier this week that he'd like to meet with her one on one.

Rancourt says she got the message, but didn't feel like she should have to chase Berry down for an apology. So Berry called her while a NEWS CENTER crew was at his office to arrange a meeting for early next week.
