NEW BEDFORD — Temistocles Ferreira, the outspoken antiviolence activist also known as "Tem Blessed" of the local hip hop group Busted 'Fro, will stand trial on Aug. 1 for allegedly assaulting police officers at UMass Dartmouth last October.
Mr. Ferreira, 33, appeared in Third District Court Friday for a pre-trial hearing.
He was also arraigned on drug possession charges for allegedly carrying a small bag of marijuana during an April 21 UMass Dartmouth function.
A Third District Court judge on Friday denied Mr. Ferreira's requests for copies and recordings of 911 tapes, photos, witness statements and UMass Dartmouth police Internal Affairs reports related to the Oct. 31, 2006 incident on campus.
According to police reports, Mr. Ferreira refused to allow police officers, who were investigating a shooting on campus that same night, to frisk him.
Mr. Ferreira attempted to strike a female police officer and resisted arrest, reports said.
Police reports said Mr. Ferreira called the officers "Nazis" and "Al Qaeda" and threatened them while en route to state police barracks for booking.
He also allegedly kicked out a police cruiser's window.
Mr. Ferreira has previously told The Standard-Times the allegations are false. He said police struck him with a flashlight and tackled him to the ground.
In an e-mail to friends and supporters, he said he was arrested "because I voiced my belief that we as American citizens, regardless of skin color, still have human rights."
Mr. Ferreira is charged with resisting arrest, threatening to commit a crime, malicious destruction of property over $250, disorderly conduct and assault and battery on a police officer.
