FREETOWN — Police are searching for a man in his 20s who attempted to pull a fourth-grade girl into the woods near her home in Assonet on Wednesday afternoon.
Neighbors who ran to assist the girl after hearing her screams for help told police the man was wearing a red and white plaid shirt and tan shorts, Lt. Walter Sawicki said.
The girl, a fourth-grade student at Freetown Elementary School, was walking from her home in a housing development on Leonard Avenue, which is off Locust Street near the Berkley town line, shortly before 4:30 p.m. when the attempted abduction occurred, police said.
The man walked out of woods "and tried to grab the girl to bring her into the woods," police said.
The girl resisted and started to scream, which alerted neighbors, who ran to her aid, police said. The neighbors provided a description of the man to police.
The girl was not injured, Lt. Sawicki said.
Freetown officers searched the woods, accompanied by a search dog and handler from the Dartmouth Police Department. A Massachusetts State Police helicopter searched the woods and the area, Lt. Sawicki said.
The dog picked up a scent and led police through the woods until the animal came to a roadway and lost the trail, police said.
Police are continuing their investigation.
Freetown Elementary School Principal Robert L. Frizelle sent a notice home to parents Thursday alerting them to the attempted abduction.
"All schools have been notified and staff will be reviewing personal safety procedures with the students," Mr. Frizelle wrote. "This is being called to your attention so you may also review with your school-age children what they should do if they are involved in such an incident."
