WBZ) BOSTON Up north, state police from Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine are teaming up to keep people safe on the highways.

The mass exodus has begun, and with the beautiful weather, many people are ready to kick off the summer holiday season.

With every stop, New Hampshire State Police Trooper John Hennessey hopes he's preventing a crash. "It's Memorial weekend weekend, it's way to fast, you're doing, 86 mph," Hennessey tells a driver he pulled over. "The posted speed limit is 65… There's too much traffic to be going that fast."

Hennessey is part of the team of state police from Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine out in force this weekend to slow drivers down.

"When we stop people traveling northbound, they're going to get the message before they come up to New Hampshire and Maine," said Major Kevin Kelly of the Massachusetts State Police Department.

And together the three states can save some lives this weekend. The three states are using all their tools -- unmarked cars, air patrols and extra crews -- to monitor holiday drivers.

"Traffic is heavy, speeds are very high, we're just asking that they slow down and have a safe, enjoyable weekend," said Sgt. Bob Quinn of the New Hampshire State Police Department.

"The traffic increases exponentially during these holiday weekends, obviously with increased traffic come increased accidents and with increase speeding violations, and we just hope people will slow down and be cautious of other drivers," said Hennessy, who says he thinks of his family out there. "You've got to slow it down, especially being the holiday weekend. Slow it down."
